Annual Chalk the Walk
Saturday, June 7th
What is Chalk the Walk?
This family friendly event – in the tradition of
European 16th Century street painting – transforms the
dull, gray concrete sidewalks of New Haven’s Middle School into
colorful, pastel pathways. This event affords all artists and
“wanna-be” artists the opportunity to be expressive in a medium that
people of all ages can relate to!
Participants can base their chalk drawings on
This years Canal Days theme “Summertime” or just be creative. A
5 X 5 ft. (approx) square will be assigned on the sidewalk in front
of Hew Haven Middle School for drawings. The possibilities are as
limitless as the artists’ imaginations as they turn the bare sidewalk
into a colorful canvas of “masterpieces!”
Some chalk will be provided. Plan to
purchase individual sticks/pieces of those colors you plan to use the
most of in your image. Some swapping of colors with other artists will
probably be possible, but if you know that you’ll be using a lot of a
few colors, you might want to buy extras of the colors ahead of time.
Registration will begin at 9:00 A.M. on a
first come basis (limit of 25). In front of New Haven Middle School .
A $5 fee for each square must be paid at time of registration.
Drawing will be judged on four criteria –
technique, use of color, composition and creativity. Also we will have
a people’s choice award.
Judging will be at 5:00 P.M. and awards will be
at 6:00 P.M.
Rules of participation:
The Chalk the walk committee reserves the right
to deem any subject matter as inappropriate for this all-age,
noncommercial event.
Only NON-oil based pastels are to be used.
(Chalk) The use of any other material is prohibited. The only
exception is the use of DILUTED TEMPERA PAINT, which may be
used as a thin wash of undercoat. Tempera paint MUST be diluted
with WATER.
